Holyoke – William H. Glenny, 92, passed away Friday October 11, 2019 at Holyoke Medical Center. Born in Holyoke, MA to the late George H. and Anne (Mercier) Glenny, he attended Holyoke Schools before entering the United States Army in 1945. During this time, when William was a teenager, it was the most influential part of his life as he experienced guarding some of history's most infamous criminals. Being involved as a guard in the trials of Nuremberg shaped the rest of his life. In later years, he was interviewed for an episode on the History Channel and spent much time speaking of his world experiences and sharing his stories and history with the world. Upon his return from Germany, William attended the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT where he became quite the talented musician. His love for music led him to learn how to play many instruments, such as the clarinet, flute, saxophone, and piano and he loved playing with many area musicians over the years. He was a member of the local musicians union and played with many South Hadley and Holyoke area concert bands. William was employed as a machinist for many years at the Springfield Armory and as a part time Guard at STCC. He also spent 20 years as a part time officer for the Auxiliary Granby Police. William was a former member of the Precious Blood Church in Holyoke. He enjoyed his many travels across the country but most of all loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Claire (Yvon) Glenny, in 1982 and by his two siblings, Leo Glenny and Leda Allen. He is survived by three devoted children, Cindy Boutot and her husband Gary of Chicopee, Bruce Glenny of Havertown, PA and Mark Glenny and his husband George Waldmann of Northampton; two grandchildren, Jillian Maheux and her husband Seth and Aaron Boutot, all of Chicopee; three great-grandchildren, Adalyn, Celia and Zaylee. Family and friends are invited to meet for calling hours on Tuesday October 15, 2019 from 4-7 PM at the Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St., in Holyoke. All are invited to meet for William’s funeral service on Wednesday October 16th starting at 8:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 9:00 AM funeral home service.
