VIVIAN MARIE PICARD
1928 – 2018
HOLYOKE - Mrs. Vivian Marie Picard (nee Gagné) of Holyoke, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully
surrounded by her family on Monday, December 10, 2018 at the age of 90.
Vivian was born to Albéric and Blanche Gagné on January 14, 1928 in Holyoke. She grew up the elder of two daughters and was predeceased by her sister, Jacqueline Gagné Callahan. She attended Perpetual Help Elementary School, graduated from Holyoke High School and subsequently graduated from the Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing. Vivian’s nursing school roommate, Shirley Picard Larkin, introduced Vivian to her brother, Ken Picard, who had just returned from serving in the US Army Aircorp on the Ivory Coast of Africa. He soon became the love of her life and they married and created a beautiful family and life together. In addition to her full time work as a private duty nurse and raising a family of five children, Vivian enjoyed keeping active. She was known to be an avid runner and cyclist, in fact took first place in her age group in the Mother’s Day 5K at the age of 75. She enjoyed collecting and refurbishing antique furniture, was an avid gardener, cook and reader.
Vivian is survived by her children David Picard (Sandra), Suzanne Picard (Richard Baer), Katherine Picard (wife of Kippy Picard, Jr who is deceased), Lawrence Picard (Samuel Gindin) and Claire-anne Williams (Daniel Williams) and 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 14, 2018 from 4-7PM at Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA. Her funeral will begin on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 8:45AM from Messier’s with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke. The Rite of Committal and Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, South Hadley. Vivian’s family would like to thank the folks at the Holyoke Health Care Center for the loving care that they provided to their mother as well as the hospice team who cared for Vivian: Natalya Gavel RN, Luz Cruz HHA and Sue Miffitt volunteer.
