Huntington – James R. Morton, Sr., 76, of Westfield, MA, peacefully passed away at his home. He was born November 11, 1944, in Northampton, MA, the son of the late Robert H. Morton, Sr. and Frances (Corbett) Morton of Florence.
Jim was educated in the Williamsburg schools and attended Smith Vocational School prior to enlisting in the US Army. His professional career included his military service and working as a 3rd Class Engineer on submarines in Groton, CT. He enjoyed keeping current on news and politics.
Jim was most passionate about his family. He treasured his time with this daughter, Angelika, and savored his interaction with his grandchildren. Consistently, Jim thought about the needs of others and tried to lend a hand to anyone needing one. In his last years, he developed a special relationship with his four-legged buddy, Toby. Toby was a special cat, both Jim and Toby cared for one another deeply.
Of special interest was Jim’s attraction to Florida’s weather and scenery. He lived in Florida for 20 years and loved to travel around in his RV to take in the sights and meet new people. “Papa”, as he was affectionately known, enjoyed wood working, fishing, puzzles, and he loved his Dunkin Donuts and coffee! He had a good sense of humor, witty, smart, kind, generous, stubborn at times, funny, selfless, and had a big heart.
Unfortunately, Jim experienced some difficulties with cancer in life. He is immeasurably grateful to the American Cancer Society’s generosity. With ACS’s support, Jim had more time to spend with his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Angelika Morton of Huntington, MA; two sons, James Morton, Jr. with his wife Jackie, and William Morton of Fairbanks, AK; his five grandchildren, Tony Morton of Woonsocket, RI, Amanda Kochapski and her fiancé Cody Clarke of Florence, MA and David Kochapski, Jr. of Huntington, MA and Hope and Grace Morton of Fairbanks, AK, a great granddaughter, Selina Morton of Woonsocket, RI and his nieces and nephews, Hedwig Gabriel and Hanelore Morton of Fairbanks, AK, Ollie “Buddy” Schmith and his wife, Lisa, and TJ Schmith. Jim was predeceased by his brothers and sister, Robert Morton, Jr., Mary Schmith, Jackie Morton and Richard Morton.
