Richard Arthur Champagne
March 23, 1941 - July 29, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Arthur Champagne, who passed away on July 29, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and thyroid cancer.
Richard was born on March 23, 1941, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Arthur Champagne and Cecile (Massé) Champagne. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964, demonstrating the dedication, discipline, and sense of duty that would define his life.
Following his military service, Richard built a successful career through hard work and perseverance. He spent 25 years with Acme Chain/US Tsubaki in Holyoke, Massachusetts, before concluding his career with Rexnord and Olympic Fasteners. Throughout his career, Richard was respected for his integrity, dependability, and unwavering commitment to doing every job to the best of his ability.
On June 22, 1963, Richard married the love of his life, Pauline (LeTellier) Champagne. Together they shared 63 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to their family.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Pauline Champagne; his children, Donna Champagne, David Champagne and his wife, Julie Lane Champagne, and Dennis Champagne and his wife, Dr. Jenny Champagne; his cherished grandchildren, Dr. Caitlyn Champagne, Aaron Champagne, and Sarah Champagne; his sister, Estelle Tack; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur Champagne and Cecile (Massé) Champagne, and by his sister, Lorraine Hilker.
Family was always Richard's greatest joy. One of the traditions he looked forward to most each year was the family's annual beach vacation. What began as treasured vacations shared with his lifelong friend, Bill Lomas, and the Lomas family grew into a cherished tradition that eventually included an ever-expanding extended family. These vacations were filled with laughter, stories, shared meals, and countless memories that strengthened lifelong bonds across generations. Richard treasured these times together, finding his greatest happiness simply being surrounded by the people he loved.
Whether he was tackling a home improvement project, maintaining his yard, or lending a helping hand, Richard was happiest when he was working. His hands were rarely still, and the care he put into everything he built and repaired reflected the pride he took in providing for his family.
Richard's greatest legacy is the example he set through his remarkable work ethic. Whether serving his country, providing for his family through his career, or caring for his home, he believed that anything worth doing was worth doing well. He led by example, teaching those around him the value of perseverance, responsibility, and taking pride in one's work.
Richard also treasured the lifelong friendships he made throughout his life. He especially looked forward to the long conversations he shared with his Air Force friend, Dennis Lane. Though miles separated them, their regular phone calls kept their friendship strong and gave them the opportunity to reminisce and stay connected over the years.
His quiet strength, humility, kindness, and steadfast devotion to his family will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Wednesday, August 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton Street, Holyoke, Massachusetts. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 6. Family and friends are asked to gather at 8:00 a.m. at Messier Funeral Home before proceeding to Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. followed by burial at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Parkinson's Foundation in Richard's memory.
