DR. RAYMOND E. GODDU 1919 � 2009 NEWBURYPORT � Dr. Raymond E. Goddu, 89, a well known Holyoke dentist, died on Saturday, March 7 at the Port Health Care Center in Newburyport, MA. He was born in Holyoke on November 1, 1919, a son of the late Antonio and Edwina (Samson) Goddu. He was a long time Holyoke and Barefoot Bay, Florida resident and most recently of Newburyport. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Assumption Prep School and Assumption College, of Worcester, then went on to further his career, graduating from the University of Maryland Dental School. He proudly served in the U. S. Navy during WWII attaining the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. He was in private practice in Holyoke from 1946 until 1976, and at the Soldiers Home of Holyoke from 1976 until 1990. He was a life member of Holyoke Elks Lodge 902, having served as Past Exalted Ruler, and Past District Deputy. He was Chief of Dental Service at Providence Hospital from 1970 until 1976 and past President of the Holyoke Dental Society. He also served as committee chairman of the parish council at the former Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and on the executive committee of Boy Scout Troop 666 at the church. He was a former member of the Beavers Club and Kiwanis. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Whitt) Goddu who died on June 23, 2002. He is survived by two sons, David of San Antonio, TX, and Richard and his wife Sheila of Port Richey, FL, and two daughters, Ellen Robinson and her husband Chris of Newburyport, and Beth Goddu of Boston. He will be sadly missed by five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews, and his sister in law, Claire Goddu of Holyoke. He was predeceased by his son Michael on September 14, 1996 and his brother, Charles in 1991. Funeral services are on Wednesday, March 11 from the Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St. (Route 5) Holyoke. A calling hour will be held from 8:30 � 9:30am followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10am at Blessed Sacrament Church. Raymond and his beloved wife, Elizabeth, �Betty� will be laid to rest together in Notre Dame Cemetery in South Hadley. In lieu of flowers contributions in Raymond�s memory may be directed to the American Lung Association of Western Mass, 393 Maple St., Springfield, MA 01105.
