Mitchell Wayne Summers, longtime resident of Holyoke and loving husband of 47 years, of Carolyn J. (Angers) Summers, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Holyoke Medical Center at the age of 68. Mitchell was born on May 30, 1955, in La Follette, TN, a son of John C. and Mary Madge (McBee ) Summers. He was raised and educated in Holyoke and later served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Mitchell was a heavy machine operator for over 40 years at Sunoco Paper Products in Holyoke. Mitchell enjoyed fishing when he had the opportunity to, tending to his garden of plants and flowers. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and doting over his granddaughters. Mitchell leaves his loving wife, Carolyn of Holyoke and sons, Brian W. Summers and his wife, Kristin of Westfield and Adam J. Summers and his wife, Sarah of Shutesbury, MA, siblings, John Summers and his wife, Sharon of Belchertown, Karen Summers of Northampton and Lisa Summers of Holyoke, three granddaughters, Hannah, Abby, and Charlotte Summers, and several nieces and nephews and close friends. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, Joseph Summers and sister, Sandra Summers. Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, February 16, for a period of visitation for Mitchell from 4 – 6:30 PM at Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St. Holyoke, followed by a service at 6:30 PM in the funeral home. Burial for Mitchell will be private and at a later date at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mitchell’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN38105.
