HOLYOKE- Leonard H. Gero, 90, passed away at the Mont Marie Heath Care Center on Saturday, October 6, 2018. He was born on January 31, 1928 in Altona, NY to the late Joseph and Mary (Provost) Gero. Leonard was educated in New York and left school to help on the family farm. He worked for construction companies building highways in New York before coming to Holyoke. Leonard worked for over 30 years at Hampden Papers before his retirement. Leonard will be remembered as a loving, hardworking man who dedicated his life to his family. Leonard enjoyed keeping his yard and garden meticulous, fixing things, and hosting family gatherings at his home. He married the late Anna (Kramer) Gero in 1955, and they spent 28 wonderful years together before her passing in 1983. Leonard was also predeceased by all his siblings; Irene Gero, Marcelle Gero, Clarence Gero, Betty Karwoski, Earl (Red) Gero, June Williamson, Andrew Gero, and Viola Mae Gero, as well as a granddaughter Ashley. He is survived by his son Leonard Gero and his wife Shirley of Holyoke and his son Sean Hurley of Boston. He will be missed by his beloved grandchildren, Manuel (Tony) Lovely, Katie May Rippentrop, Melissa Gero and her partner Jim, Danielle Stratton and her husband Fred, Andrea Monette and her husband Chris, Melody Gero and her partner Nick, and Maureen Gero. He also leaves 8 great grandchildren, several extended family, nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 4PM-7PM at the Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton Street, Holyoke. His funeral will begin on Monday, October 15, 2018 9AM from Messier’s followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke.
