EMMA “MARIE” (DEROO) BETTENCOURT

1933-2018

CHICOPEE- Emma “Marie” Bettencourt, 85, passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Wingate at South Hadley. Born in New London CT, daughter of Clyde DeRoo and Elizabeth (Greene) DeRoo, she graduated from Williams Memorial Institute and was a secretary at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab in New London before her marriage to William Bettencourt in 1951. She had lived in Chicopee since 1971 when her husband retired from the Air Force. She was active in both local and state politics, was a long-time member of the Chicopee Library Board of Trustees and served on the Citizens Advisory Committee in the Department of Community Development. She is survived by her husband William of 66 years, her daughter Cathy Monfette and her husband Arthur of South Hadley, her son Michael Bettencourt and his wife Maria Beatriz Alvarez of New Jersey, her beloved grandson Christopher Monfette and his wife Sasha of Los Angeles, California, her sister Beth MacDonald of Niantic, Connecticut, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She had many neighbors and dear friends she treasured over the years. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 from 4-7PM at Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St., Holyoke, MA 01040. Her funeral will begin at 8:30AM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from Messiers’ with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Anne Parish, 30 College St., Chicopee, MA 01020. The Rite of Committal and Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Lyman St., South Hadley MA 01075.
