LAURENCE COURNOYER, SR 1944 � 2017 HOLYOKE- Laurence Cournoyer Sr. 72, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Holyoke, MA passed away February 18, 2017. He was born May 23, 1944 in Holyoke, MA the son of the late Arthur and Jeannette (Taupier) Cournoyer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice (Engel) Cournoyer; sons, Laurence, Jr and his wife Bonnie; Steven Cournoyer; his daughters, Christine Devin and her husband Robert; Catherine Lamirande and her husband Brian. He leaves 8 grandchildren, Scott and Lindsay Cournoyer, Kevin and Alyssa Cournoyer, Jenna Devin, Kayla, Sydney and Britta Cournoyer. He leaves 2 brothers, Norman, Sr and his wife Darlene; Raymond and a sister, Denise Beegle and her husband James. He also leaves a brother-in-law James Engel and his wife Jackie; a daughter in law, Sharon and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was a police officer retiring after 32 years of honorable service with the Holyoke Police Dept. He was instrumental in creating the firearms program and the traffic division in the department. He was a member of the Mass Police Association and the Holyoke Police Relief Association. He was also an officer in the patrolman�s local union serving as treasurer and secretary. While he was assigned to the detective bureau, he was the domestic violence investigator. He served as court liaison officer for several years until he was promoted to Sgt. He was then reassigned to the Operations bureau as a street supervisor, a position he held for 8 years, until his retirement in 2003. Larry was also very active in his community in Holyoke. He was proprietor of the 7-eleven on Pleasant and Dwight for several years. He sponsored several youth teams in baseball and softball in Holyoke and was very active in raising money for the MDA Labor Day Weekend Telethon. After retiring, he and his wife relocated to Myrtle Beach, SC where he continued to be active in his community and church. He was a member of St Michaels Church in Murrells Inlet, SC and also the SC Coastal Shields, a group of retired police from all over the country. He belonged to the SC Moose Lodge #2351. He also loved to golf and was a member of the Island Green Golf Course before it closed and was presently a member of the Indigo Creek Golf Club in Murrells Inlet. Calling hours will be a held at Messier Funeral Home, 1944 Northampton St., Holyoke, MA on Friday, March 3, 2017, from 4 pm - 7 pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 4th at Our Lady of the Cross, Holyoke, MA at 10:30AM.
