GEORGE BELALES

1921 – 2017

HOLYOKE- George Belales, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday October 8, 2017 at home. He was born in Holyoke on March 21, 1921 a son of the late Theodore and Victoria (Feloukas) Belales. He married Diana (Andricopoulos) on March 7, 1948 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and the couple celebrated and enjoyed over 65 years of marriage before her passing in 2013. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 704th Military Police Battalion. George was a proud Holyoke Firefighter for over 32 years retiring in 1977. He also simultaneously held various positions at Dual Manufacturing in Holyoke. A dedicated and hardworking man, George also worked at Magna Buick for over 10 years as a runner and with Messier Funeral Home as a funeral assistant for over 20 years. George was part of a founding family of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church where he remained active in all its activities and received the Clergy-Laity Award in 1999 for his service to the church. He was a member of the Mt. Tom Masonic Lodge for 71 years and was presented with a 70 year pin in 2016. George was proud to receive a Veterans Appreciation Award in 2017. He enjoyed traveling to Hampton Beach, Cape Cod and Fenway Park as he was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and supporter, as well as a New England Patriots fan. George was always involved in fitness, whether it was working out in his basement, participating in cardiac rehab with his brother Nick, or taking walks around the neighborhood. His smile will be missed by all who knew him, as well as his warm personality and quick wit. Most of all he loved, protected, and supported his entire family who now mourn his passing. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Victoria (Belales) Verdi and her husband Dennis of Holyoke; granddaughter, Diane (Verdi) Lukomski and her husband John Jr. of Holyoke; nephew, Theodore Belales and his wife Angela and their daughters, Katerina and Nicoletta of Southington, CT; niece, Marguerita (Belales) Papageorge and her husband Savas and their daughters, Evyenia and Vasoula of Southington, CT; niece, Christina (Speropoulos) Reardon and her husband Ray of Holyoke; as well as several nieces and nephews in Greece. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, George was also predeceased by his sister, Mary (Belales) Constantelos; his brother, Nicholas Belales and his wife Eugenia; and by a sister in law, Vasiliki Speropoulos and her husband Panos. A heartfelt thank you to George’s caregivers whom he loved dearly, Mary Greaney, Sonia DeJesus and Jerika Santana.
